Oru is a lamp created from an attempt to rethink the way we manufacture a three-dimensional product.
Instead of 3D-printing the lamp as a volumetric object, its components are printed as thin, flat, two-dimensional surfaces and assembled using a simple connector system to form a three-dimensional body. This approach significantly reduces printing time and material consumption, while also minimizing the product’s volume during packaging and transportation. For us, this is an integral part of the product’s design. In a world facing a climate crisis, we believe designers need to take responsibility not only for the products they create, but also for the amount of material and energy required to produce them.
Alongside the efficiency of the manufacturing process, we wanted to bring something into the product that cannot be perfectly manufactured: the touch of a human hand. Each lamp features a hand-drawn illustration, created with a free and imperfect line. The same illustration can be reproduced again and again, while still retaining the feeling of something made by hand. At a time when more and more creative processes are becoming digital and automated, we see great value in objects that carry a trace of the person who made them.
Oru is now a finished product. Its dimensions, materials, structure, and connection system have all been developed and refined. From here, we want to continue exploring the lamp’s graphic possibilities through different colors, illustrations, and editions, including collaborations with illustrators and designers, each bringing their own interpretation to Oru.
For us, Oru is an attempt to bring together efficient, scalable production with a product that still feels personal, tactile, and human.
